Animperia compared with other 2D animation software

Updated

Animperia is a 2D animation studio that runs in a desktop browser on Windows, Mac or Linux. You draw characters in vector or bring them in as SVG, rig them with bones and pivots, animate them on a timeline of layers, keyframes and tweens, draw frame by frame with onion skin, and drop voice lines on them for automatic lip sync. Scenes export as MP4 video, GIFs, see-through clips and PNG images. It’s free during the beta.

It isn’t the right tool for everyone. Each page below compares it with one tool, with dated facts about that tool, what carries over, what Animperia doesn’t do yet and how to bring your artwork across. Here’s the short version.

If you use… Consider Animperia if… Stay where you are if…
Adobe Animate you want Animate’s timeline in a browser, on Linux too, without a subscription you publish HTML5 Canvas, games or anything interactive, or need your FLA files to open
Flash you miss the Flash workflow and look, and want to make new cartoons as video you want to play old SWF files, which is Ruffle’s job, or need ActionScript
Moho you rig simple characters and want to animate from any computer, with nothing to install your rigs depend on Smart Bones, meshes or physics
Toon Boom Harmony you make your own cartoons and Harmony’s subscription is more than a hobby needs you work in, or are training for, a studio pipeline
Cartoon Animator you’re on a Mac or Linux, or want to draw your own characters and animate them on a real timeline you depend on ready-made characters, motion libraries or motion capture
FlipaClip you want to animate frame by frame on a Windows, Mac or Linux computer, with room for rigs and lip sync later you animate on a phone or tablet, or need to work offline

What every comparison has in common

  • Dated facts. Prices, platforms and features of other tools are checked on their own pages and dated, so you can see how fresh they are.
  • No file conversion. Animperia can’t open another tool’s project files. Your artwork comes over as SVG, and you animate it again.
  • What’s missing, said plainly. Each page lists what Animperia doesn’t do yet, from interactivity to offline work.
  • Everything by hand. You can draw, rig and animate everything yourself. The AI helpers are optional.

If one of these sounds like you, sign up for the beta. It’s free while the beta lasts.
